![]() According to National Geographic, there can be as many as 20 wild goats. Goats are very social creatures and live in groups called herds. The largest herd recorded is the Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) herd as it travels through the western plains of southern Africa in the 19th century. How many herds are there? On average, a herd of cows on a long drive (for example, a railhead from Texas to Kansas) was about 3,000. Predators such as lions, wolves and coyotes pose a great risk to domestic herds. They move from one fertile grassland to another without a systematic direction. For example, goats, sheep and llamas live in herds as a form of protection. ![]() Many animals live naturally in groups called herds and move with them. Animals that play this role are called "control animals" because their behavior predicts the behavior of the entire herd. ![]() However, there may be two or a few animals that are more likely to be imitated by the majority of the herd than other animals.
